If you consider yourself the espresso connoisseur, or just want a great cup of espresso without having to stand in line at your local shop, then you are probably in the market for an excellent espresso machine.

If you have heard about the Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine, you will want to know whether this product is worth your hard earned money. Is it?

In this article, I will give you both the pros and cons of using the Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine in your home. By the end of this review, you should have a better idea of whether you want to dedicate counter space to this product or not.

What I Love about the Rancilio Silva

Quality

Think about fine leather handbag and the name Gucci is the first that occur. Think about awesome sports car and the name Ferrari is the first that occur. Think about fantastic espresso machine and the name Rancilio is the first that occur.

When it comes to quality, it is hard to beat the Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine. With this machine, I can make microfoam, espressos that are not bitter or sour tasting, and that taste better than espressos made from other machines.

I also appreciate the fact that the machine runs very quietly. No one likes a loud espresso machine first thing in the morning!

Features

The Rancilio Silvia machine is second to none when it comes to features. The brass boiler, larger than average tank, and more than adequate steaming pressure all come together to make a delicious espresso.

This particular espresso machine is also sturdy and reliable. Some online reviewers have marveled at the fact that they have owned their Rancilio Silvia machine for over five years. Trust me. If you buy this machine, do not plan on freeing up counter space for at least the next half-decade.

Taste

When it comes to espresso machines, it all comes down to whether the product in question makes… good espressos. In this all-important category, the Rancilio Silvia Espresso receives an “A+”.

Whenever I make espressos, I get the taste of the beans sent straight to my waiting cup. I have yet to receive a bitter or sour shot from this machine.

What I Don’t Like about the Rancilio Silva

While there are a lot of great things to say about the Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine, this review would be remiss if I did not discuss some of the cons of the product. Use these points to decide whether or not this espresso machine is for you.

Grinder

One thing that both I and other online reviewers noticed about the Rancilio Silvia machine is that it is very finicky. When I make espressos, I always have to do things just so in order to get the best result.

Another aspect of this machine that is slightly troubling is that you will need to get a high quality burr grinder in order to get adequate espressos. Almost all of the online reviews echoed that sentiment.

If you are buying this machine, plan on spending a few hundred extra dollars on a good grinder.

Difficult:

Since I am an espresso aficionado, it was relatively easy for me to find my way around this machine.

However, many online reviewers stated that they found the Rancilio Silvia machine extremely difficult to use. If you are not one of those espresso drinkers who can work their way around these machines blindfolded, there are free online tutorials that you can watch.

PID

A proportional integral derivative electronic controller, or PID, helps users control the temperature consistency on an espresso machine.

Even though I found temperature control to be easier once I did a little trial and error, some users may find it easier to just buy a PID.

Temperature Surfing

Some online reviewers had a lot to say about the need to search for a good temperature in order to make espressos. One reviewer complained about how, depending on the temperature, brew times could be “over a minute.”

Know Your Stuff Before Buying

You can go through piles and piles of espresso maker reviews. I bet some will speak in favor of it while some will speak against it. It is the classic rule of half-full and half-empty perspective.

Some are more easily contented than the others. Some are simply so easily discontented than others.

You’ve seen my take of what I deem as one of the finest coffee maker currently available. The rest lies in your hand. Weigh the pros and cons and decide for yourself which points are most peculiar to your case.

  1. Great article. Sounds like a high quality coffee maker. I’m thinking about trying it out.

  2. This machine is called Rancilio Silvia, not Silva. And while a very good quality entry level espreeso machine, it is more of a Fiat than a Ferrari.
